On Memorial Day we went up to work on the cabin. When we were driving in we noticed an elk lying down in the sage brush. We thought that either she was about to have a baby or had been hit by a truck on the highway. Luckily, it was because she was going to give birth. About three hours later when Aunt Trudy and Grandma were on their way out they saw the baby curled up on the side of the road. It was an amazing experience to see this perfect sign of Spring!
We were able to get really close to the baby. It was cold that day with on and off rain, hail, and snow. I wanted to take off Dad's coat that I was wearing and put it on the baby elk.
The mother was just a little ways off among the trees, waiting until we were gone. (I tried to point her out with a green circle, sorry it's kind of hard to see.)

This has to be the sweetest thing ever! Yeah, birth is ugly, but it is soooo beautiful, too.
Hopefully the baby comes back to visit you guys when you go down to the cabin.
...I am mad at the mama elk for abandoning her baby, though.
